Real Advice: Ice Cream for Dinner is Acceptable

When my children were growing up sometimes, in the Summer months, I’d make a giant multi-banana split for dinner and we’d share that in a giant metal bowl. We’d sit on the floor around the coffee table, spoons in hand, laughing and talking, building an even stronger bond with one another. As teenagers, every six … Read more

The gym mix

Back in the old days…LOL! I can’t even go there. About 5 years ago I managed to turn myself around from a place where I really felt like I was drowning in my body. I was taking Prilosec for severe reflux and my body wasn’t responding well to it. I had nightmares and poor sleep the 5 years I was on it, I was retaining water and my blood pressure was super high (it’s always been low to perfect). Here I was (am) a former professional athlete, someone who was once totally in tune with the smallest muscles in her body, so out of shape that I couldn’t walk a flight of stairs without my heart pounding.

I started to make some small changes, gone were the triple vente mocha’s with whipped cream these were gradually replaced with a single mocha with non-fat milk – extra milk, no whipped cream. Just cutting out the whipped cream helped me lose 6 pounds. I talked to my Doctor about switching reflux meds which helped a lot. I got Dr. Phil’s cookbook and discovered some pretty good recipes. I joined the gym and started yoga. Within 13 weeks I’d lost multiple clothing sizes and felt fantastic. I had a ton of energy and then the gym changed hands and my yoga teacher left and well…. that’s where to story gets sad.

Anyway, that’s not the point of this post, the point is that I ended up using the same philosophy for my iPod’s gym mix that I had when I was skating, mixing songs with various beats per minute to keep me going through my work out. My work out rule is pretty simple 30 minutes on the treadmill is all that I promise myself, everything else is gravy. My mix included something particularly upbeat at the 15 minute mark which is when fatigue and boredom start to edge out determination. With something particularly fast at the 27 minute mark to keep me moving that last 3 minutes. My gym mix was long enough to keep me entertained if I did the weight portion of the gym visit. If I start making a circuit on the weight machines I am almost guaranteed to complete 3 reps of 13 each, which would take another 25-35 minutes or so.
